holidays

just realized that in the last few days i've said "i hate valentines day" a few times.

this is not true. i really don't hate any day. but i think i should clarify what i mean when i said that. and we can take more than one holiday into consideration here: how about Christmas and valentines day?

here's the deal. during these holidays, people dig into debt to buy loved ones a really expensive Christmas present. nice gesture, i understand. but is that really what the holiday is about? i've been telling family members for years "seriously, presents is not what this day is about. so, please. i've got everything i need. don't get me anything." not to say i'm against presents. we all appreciate them. i'm saying that the important part is that everyone gets together and celebrates for the REAL reason. plus, handmade/thoughtful gifts = best gifts ever. always.

and, valentines day. every single couple goes out. expensive restaurant, expensive movie, probably some jewelry or expensive crap. worst part? some people expect this kind of behavior. are there that many shallow people in the world? for serious. i'm not saying that people shouldn't celebrate a good relationship. but to say that one day is THE day out of the year to do that? if i like someone, i'll tell them on everyday except v-day. (okay, not necessarily, but you guys get the point.)

the point is that everyday should be a day to celebrate everything you have, just because it's been given to you for one more day, right?

i won't say "don't have a good valentines day". i just think everyday is as good and as important as you make it.

that's it! have a wonderful friday!!

  1. I have to agree. Commercialization kills things. Personally, I'm pretty low maintenance, which my husband loves, of course. I'd prefer he write me a note every so often to buying me gifts. I love giving gifts, and of course appreciate the ones I get, but EXPECTING gifts is a whole different ball game, no matter what day it is.

My favorite gifts are the ones that mean something. I don't care if it's from the dollar store. In fact, this is one of my favorite gifts in a LONG TIME:

    Yeah, I'm the black sheep.

So, I'm with you. I'll take time with loved ones over material things any day.
